What is the importance of the Pre-Advisement Assessment?

Clarkson College is very interested in the success of our students.

The Pre-Advisement Assessment has been piloted over 10 semesters.

Data collected during the pilot shows a strong relationship between the Pre-Advisement Assessment and student success in Clarkson College programs.

Advisors will utilize Pre-Assessment results to pro-actively organize support services. The following Support Systems have been identified to facilitate student success:

  • Recitation for foundational science classes (Anatomy, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Physiology)
Recitation courses meet for one hour each week to reinforce the concepts and knowledge discussed in the lecture course.   Topics such as study skills, reading, note-taking, time management, and test-taking strategies are explored in conjunction with course content.  Recitation also provides students an opportunity to ask questions and practice new skills in a small group environment.
  • Clarkson College Writing Lab
The Writing Lab assists students with all levels of writing.  Students receive tutoring from peers who provide direction at every stage of the writing process, including beginning a paper, writing a thesis, organizing ideas, using APA style or simply getting feedback from a second pair of eyes.   Appointments are available on campus and online – both are interactive and synchronous.
  • Student Success Center Services and Workshops
    • Tutoring
    • Personal and academic counseling
    • Online job postings
    • Resources for resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills and networking
    • Materials for improving study skills, test taking, test anxiety, note taking, building your self-esteem, and stress management
    • Computer skills, how to use a computer, how to use the Internet and Microsoft Office assistance
    • Board and certification review materials
    • Workshops focusing on student needs
    • Mentoring Program
    • Writing Lab is located in the Success Center
  • Counselor Services – no charge for students
Clarkson College works with Arbor Family Counseling to offer students confidential short-term individual counseling sessions with a licensed counselor on campus. The details and course of counseling are worked out collaboratively by the student and the counselor. Short-term counseling allows the student to work on immediate concerns and, typically, come to a resolution. An appropriate referral may be made for further counseling or therapeutic services
